Spring School “Complex networks: theory, methods, and applications (4th edition)”

Villa del Grumello, Como, Italy, 14-18 May 2018

ntmd.lakecomoschool.org

Many real systems can be modeled as networks, where the elements of the system are nodes and interactions between elements are edges. An even larger set of systems can be modeled using dynamical processes on networks, which are in turn affected by the dynamics. Networks thus represent the backbone of many complex systems, and their theoretical and computational analysis makes it possible to gain insights into numerous applications. Networks permeate almost every conceivable discipline —including sociology, transportation, economics and finance, biology, and myriad others — and the study of “network science” has thus become a crucial component of modern scientific education.

The school “Complex Networks: Theory, Methods, and Applications” offers a succinct education in network science. It is open to all aspiring scholars in any area of science or engineering who wish to study networks of any kind (whether theoretical or applied), and it is especially addressed to doctoral students and young postdoctoral scholars. The aim of the school is to deepen into both theoretical developments and applications in targeted fields.

Lecturers:

  • Albert-László Barabási
  • Stefano Battiston
  • Ulrik Brandes
  • Vittoria Colizza
  • Puck Rombach
  • Alessandro Vespignani

International School on Informatics and Dynamics in Complex Networks

The International School on Informatics and Dynamics in Complex Networks is organized at the University of Catania, Italy, by the Department of Electrical Electronics and Computer Science and the Cometa Consortium. It will be held from 15  to 19 October 2018 at the “Cittadella” campus where most of the technical faculties are hosted and consist of a series of lectures given by leading scientists in the field, aiming at providing a comprehensive treatment from background material to advanced results . The school is specially directed to PhD students and young researchers interested to the diverse aspects of the theory and applications of complex networks in science and engineering. Slots for presentations by the participants are also scheduled with an award to the best presentation. The school aims at encouraging cross-disciplinary discussions between participants and speakers and start new joint researches.

Master in “Physics of Data” @University of Padova

On Thursday 19 April, at the University of Padova, there will be the presentation of the new Master in “Physics of Data”, at the Physics and Astronomy Department of the University of Padova.

The onset of big data has led to an explosion of datasets with a far more complex structure and beyond standard physics. The program intends to build an academic and professional figure that combines advanced knowledge in the field of Physics with a high-level training in Data Science.
The modeling and the theoretical interpretation of complex natural phenomena from large amounts of data are at the core of the research in Physics. The Big Data revolution presents in this sense the challenges and opportunities for the physicist of today. In addition to the figure of Data Scientist, specialized purely in the analysis of large amounts of data, it is increasingly clear the need to also train figures able to develop the methods and techniques that are fundamental for such analysis – in this sense, we named the program of Physics of the Data.  Training in Physics, Mathematics, and Computation is increasingly necessary to generate such innovation and development. The program will thus train a new generation of physicists, which we could define as “data physicists”, equipped with tools that will allow them to face the challenges that the digital revolution has brought in our society.
